The thing that makes holidays so clever is the way they fool us into thinking that they're going to be fun, despite the fact that they're almost always awful. Even when we're right in the middle of a terrible holiday, instead of thinking, "I've had it with you, Fourth of July, see if I ever look forward to you again!" we think, "I might be having an awful time now, but next year will be great!"
